People call The Eagles “the quintessential California Band”…but the ORIGINAL Los Angeles, California band, really, was Three Dog Night. Their songs spoke to the irony that hung over The City Of Angels, and they injected songs written by other songwriters with their particular brand of wink-and-nudge humor. Three Dog Night made The Eagles references to California as the ‘Land of the Lotus Eaters’ possible.
Three Dog Night formed in 1967 with a line-up consisting of vocalists Danny Hutton, Cory Wells, and Chuck Negron. This lineup was soon augmented by Jimmy Greenspoon (keyboards), Joe Schermie (bass), Michael Allsup (guitar), and Floyd Sneed (drums). The band registered 21 Billboard Top 40 hits (with three hitting number one) between 1969 and 1975. It helped introduce mainstream audiences to the work of many songwriters, including Paul Williams (“An Old Fashioned Love Song“), Hoyt Axton (“Joy to the World“), Laura Nyro (“Eli’s Comin’“), Harry Nilsson (“One“), Randy Newman (“Mama Told Me Not to Come“), and Leo Sayer (“The Show Must Go On“)
Songs like “Never Been to Spain,” “Easy To Be Hard,” “Shambala,” “Celebrate,” “Liar,” “Black & White,” and “Out In the Country” became hits and further cemented Three Dog Night as hit-makers to be taken seriously. From the Whiskey A Go-Go to stadium-level success in the blink of an eye.
