Have you ever wanted to change your look or maybe your hairstyle? Cutting your hair can be empowering. If there’s something about changing your hair that makes you feel empowered you are not alone. I’ve done this myself.
Mental health counselor Dr. Danielle Forshee, LLC explains, “Hair is an extension of our identity, how we see ourselves, and how we would like others to see us. When we need a change, cutting or changing our hair is usually considered because there is a significant amount of meaning about what our hair means to us in terms of our identity, and how others perceive us.” She adds that people don’t solely yearn for hair changes when they’ve been through something traumatic or upsetting, but also after positive live changes such as having a baby, starting a new relationship, or getting a promotion. Changing your hair, Forshee says, “symbolizes a new start.”
