Finding the Perfect Pumpkin for Halloween

Pumpkin “patches,” are popping up all over Amarillo.  This time of year it’s super easy to find that perfect Pumpkin for your Halloween fun with the kids.   When looking for a pumpkin though, there are several things you should do to insure you get a great one to carve.

  1. Look for a fresh one.  If you can look for one where the stem is intact and still green.  That shows it’s been recently picked and it will probably last longer.
  2. Look your pumpkin prospect over.  Look for soft spots, mold and press on it with your thumbs to check for soft spots.  Be sure to look on the bottom of the pumpkin too.
  3.  Tap the outside of the pumpkin.  If it’s a little hollow sounding, it means it will probably be easier to carve.
  4. Don’t get a pumpkin with deep ribs.  If you’re going to carve it, choose a pumpkin with flatter walls.  It makes it easier to carve. Longer pumpkins are typically harder to carve too than their rounder counter parts.
  5. Finally, be sure to set your pumpkin on a flat surface to make sure it’s stable and doesn’t lean.
