Is It Safe To ‘Sweat It Out’ At The Gym

Is it safe to ‘sweat it out’ at the gym when you’ve got a cold?

Dr. Jessalyn Adam, with Baltimore’s Mercy Medical Center, says it depends on what your symptoms are– if they’re above your neck working out is ok. She explains, “If you have symptoms below the neck, then you probably shouldn’t work out.”If you have a runny nose, nasal congestion, or a sore throat you can hit the gym, but if you have a cough, shortness of breath, muscle aches, or general chest congestion you should rest instead.

Overall the experts say you should listen to your body– don’t feel obliged to go to the gym if you feel terrible. Many at the gym would prefer that you stay home and not share your cold.
