The City of Amarillo has renewed its Drought Contingency Plan in advance of the unknown weather patterns of Summer.

The plan comes up for renewal every five years, and is required by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality. Amarillo last renewed it in 2019.

Interim City Manager Floyd Hartman says “Amarillo has a history of extended periods of drought,” and the Drought Contingency Plan allows Amarillo to implement policies and strategies to help conserve the water supply.

The plan includes various stages such as voluntary outdoor watering when reservoir levels are low. The last time Amarillo experienced this stage was in 2022.
