Parasite Attacks Doves and Pigeons

A total of 200 doves have died in the last month in Texas due to the parasite Trichomonas gallinae.

 Texas Parks and Wildlife has confirmed the number and say there is no health risk to the general public.

The disease is most common in pigeons and doves, but other raptor birds can be infected as well.

Wild West Wildlife Rehabilitation Center officials say the disease cannot be transmitted to domestic animals like dogs or cats.

Chickens or turkeys, that share water or food with wild birds are vulnerable if one of those wild birds is sick and then gets in contact with your domestic, private flock,

The parasite is treatable and the Rehab Center treats several dozen birds every year.

Texas Parks and Wildlife says you should report any bird you believe has the parasite to your local Wildlife Rehab Center.
