Unfortunately, The State of Texas has seen an a sharp increase of car accident fatalities involving  people bicycling and walking or running.  TxDot has just released suggestions to help us all stay safe, but enjoy our motorways.

  • Remember if Your are driving a Motor Vehicle Texas State Law Requires:  You must stop and yield for pedestrians, bicyclists and other vulnerable road users in crosswalks.    When Turning…Always yield the right of way to pedestrians and bicyclists.   Pass bikes at a safe distance and give bicyclists room to ride.  I might also add…this also goes for people walking as well.

If you are walking:    Cross the street only at intersections and crosswalks.  Obey all Traffic and Crosswalk signals.   Use sidewalks.  If there are no sidewalks….walk on the left side of the road facing oncoming traffic.  I personally would like to add to this to wear bright colored reflective gear.  Reflective vests and jackets can be purchased very inexpensively at most sporting good stores, as well as Lowe’s, and Home Depot.

If you’re riding a bike:  Always stop at red lights and stop signs.   Ride in the same direction as traffic and use bike lanes…or ride as near as possible to the right hand curb.   Use turn signals when turning or stopping.  At night make sure your bike has a white light on the front and a red light or reflector on the back.

Above all, we all must stay alert and be cautious when using our roadways.  Whether we’re on a well traveled thorough fare…or a neighborhood street.  And please don’t text and drive.  Be Safe, Drive Smart…A Reminder for TxDot.

Special Thanks To This Reminder For TxDot…as a service to keep us all safe on roadways.
